
Macon, GA - Joel Cortes (United States Navy Retired) 90, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 surrounded by his family. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Noon on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Father Michael Kavanaugh officiating. A rosary will be said on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will greet friends following the rosary at 5:30 p.m. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors.
Mr. Cortes was born in Sterling, CO to the late J. Santos and Secundina Espinosa Cortes. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Paulette Cortes and a son, David Cortes and a granddaughter, Victoria Cortes, brothers, Gill Cortes of Sterling, CO, Joe Cortes of Seattle, WA, Ruben Cortes of Boise, ID, sisters, Eva Mendoza of San Antonio, TX and Rosie Leija of San Antonio, TX. He was a graduate of Georgia College and State University and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He was active in the American Legion, Fleet Reserve, Disabled American Veterans and the Toastmasters Club. He was retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer AMCS from the United States Navy, serving in the fleet aircraft maintenance systems command. He was also retired from Robins Air Force Base after seventeen years service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Cortes was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty seven years, Winnie Lovelace Cortes of Macon, children; Alan Cortes of Macon, Ken (Janice) Cortes of Lizella, Sandra (Morgan) Corley of Bolingbroke, Richard Cortes of Macon, Glen (Kathi) Cortes of Macon, Steve (Patricia) Cortes of Red Oak, TX, daughter-in-law; Karen Cortes of Ellijay, GA, grandchildren; Alan Cortes, Jr., Amy Cortes, Dona Cortes, Natalie (Ryan) Casbon, Jessie (Brandon) Winget, Rebecca Robitzsch, Joel Cortes, Justin Cortes, Ayla Cortes, Austin Cortes, Amber Cortes, Steven Cortes, Kyle Cortes, Nicole Cortes, Seve Cortes and Casey Cortes, great grandchildren; Abriana and Tyler Cortes, Cason Gilpin, William Casbon, Carly Winget, Cameryn Winget, Cole Winget and Morgan Cortes, three sisters; Ruth Hasler of San Antonio, TX, Josephine Flores of San Antonio, TX and Mary Ellen Gonzales of Santa Monica, CA. and many nieces and nephews.
