

John D. “Major” Smith, Jr., 82, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Lizella United Methodist Church with burial in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Loran Smith and the Rev. Richard Campbell will officiate. The family will meet friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. They suggest that those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
Mr. Smith, son of the late Ruby Kate Sutton Smith and John D. Smith, Sr. was born in Macon and had lived and maintained “The Smith Family Farm” for over fifty years, since 1947. He was a member of the Georgia Milk Producers, “Dairy Shrine Club,” the Georgia Farm Bureau and the 4-H Club. Mr. Smith was a member of Lizella United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class and was a leader of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. For many years, he coached Little League. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sonny Smith.
Survivors include his devoted wife of sixty-three years, Helen C. Smith of Lizella; his son, Darby Smith; his daughter, Cherry Green of Lizella; his son, David (Sharon) Smith of Reidsville; his grandchildren, Shane Smith, Matt (Becky) Smith, David (Zan) Rickman, Sara Beth (Matt) Stout, Merry Anna (Thomas) Staub, Seth Greene, Hannah Leigh (Lee) Jarriel, Jake Smith and Colton Smith; great grandchildren; Mia, Matthew, Carter, Michaela, Ruthie, Olivia and Austyn, and sister-in-law, Betty Smith.
