Lewis Romero
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” — III John 1:4
Lewis Romero, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, proud Cajun, and decorated United States Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully in Augusta, Georgia. Born in the Youngsville, Louisiana area, Lewis carried the rich heritage of Cajun country along the Atchafalaya Basin throughout his life. The son of Edwin Romero and Beulah Boutte, Lewis experienced a childhood marked by poverty and hardship.
From an early age, he worked in farm labor and, alongside his mother, helped support their family of five children while caring for his ailing father. These challenges forged a resilience and strength of character that defined his life. Seeking a better future, Lewis joined the United States Air Force, serving honorably from 1951 to 1971 and rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant. His first assignment was in England, where he proudly served as a military boxer. During his distinguished career, he completed two tours in Vietnam. In 1968, following the heartbreaking loss of a child and the trials of war, Lewis experienced a profound spiritual transformation, surrendering his life to Jesus Christ. From that moment forward, his faith became the cornerstone of his life. Raised in the Southern Baptist tradition and later known as a devoted Evangelical follower of Jesus, he passionately shared the message of salvation and God’s grace with everyone he encountered.
Lewis shared 62 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mae Romero (1939–2025). He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Percy Romero and Henry Romero; his wife; and a beloved child. He is lovingly remembered by his children: William “Bill” Romero (Kim), with grandchildren Lauren Romero Ward (Paul), William Bryce Romero, Tyler Martin and Ashley Martin; and Sarah Romero, with grandchildren Brittany Tilley, Ashley Lariscy, and Hailey Lariscy. Great-grandchildren include Rylee Tilley, Anistyn Mingle, and Justin Leeks. Lewis is also survived by his sisters, Grace DeCoux and Jean Romero. Mary Mathis was a dedicated caregiver and friend.
A Celebration of his life will start at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Bobby Smith officiating. A visitation will be held an hour prior at Snow's @ Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home.
