She attended Jordan Sellars High School in Burlington, North Carolina. In 1943, Mary Mildred migrated from North Carolina to Harlem, in New York City. She met Laurence Gassaway of Macon, Georgia and in 1948, they were joined in marriage. From this union, two children were born Eudelia and Ase'.
Upon receiving an advanced certificate in dressmaking and a GED, Mary Mildred employed her skills to become a seamstress. As a seamstress, she worked in New York's Garment District Industry, also known as 7th Avenue or Fashion Avenue, until her retirement in 1988.
In 1990, Laurence and Mary Mildred relocated to Macon, Georgia, to live out their retirement years. They spent their retirement travelling to many foreign and local destinations; entertaining family and friends; making new acquaintances; and spending holidays with their children.
After Laurence's departure in 2000, Mary Mildred found a church home at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on October 9, 2000. On October 21, 2024, the Lord saw fit to call Mary Mildred to rest from her labors of his life.
Mary Mildred leaves to celebrate her wonderful life of love, joy, sharing and caring. Helping others, and other gifts of God: Her son, Ase' Kuasi-Gassaway, and daughter, Eudelia Gassaway-Price, a host of relatives, friends and neighbors.
