Robert Turner, 103, formerly Detroit, Michigan (1921 – 1986) or Sun City, Arizona (April, 1986- August, 2019) or Naples, FL (August, 2019 – February, 2025) residing in Perry, Georgia passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Frank Turner and Ella Rose Hall Turner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Eva Stepniak Turner, Sister, Eva Edwards and Brother, William Turner.
Robert served during WWII 1942-45 in the US Navy on the LST-767. The LST-767 earned One Battle Star for WWII service. The USS LCT-749 launched from on board USS LST-767, off Okinawa on April 3, 1945. The LCT-749 had been put aboard the LST-767 at Pearl Harbor on December 10, 1944.
During the war, Roberts was stationed in Quincey, Massachusetts and there he became a terrific entertainer at the Copacabana Lounge. The family also remembers Robert’s love for baseball. He was an excellent ballplayer along with his Sister, Eva and brother, David.
His two brothers also served with him. Brother Leonard, a US Marine with the 2nd Raider Battalion, and Willaim (RIP) a US Marine Corp Retired as a Sargent Major (Serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.)
He always talked about the time his ship was delivering supplies on Guadalcanal and found his brother, Leonard, there at the same time. He remembered it was a “Happy Time” to see Leonard, but departing was “SCARY” with all the uncertainties if they would ever see each other again.
Robert was also very proud of his younger brothers, David and Marcus who served in the Army in the Late 50’s – early 60’s and all the other younger generation of family members that served our country,.
He was a Proto Type Auto Technician with Fisher Body Central Engineering at General Motors in Michigan (Retired April 1, 1984) and a member of the VFW Post 4254 in Bonita Springs, FL and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Perry, GA.
He is survived by his siblings, Leonard Turner, Rose Hart, Lillian Rouland, David Turner, Marcus Turner and Howard (Jerry) Turner; 10 Nieces, 5 Nephews, 9 Great Nieces, 10 Great Nephews, 10 Great Great Nieces, and 11 Great Great Nephews.
It was always a point of interest that the Hall Family, Robert’s mother Ella Hall at age 9 and her family from Brighton, England had booked passage on the Titanic in South Hampton. But because his grandmother was pregnant (she had morning sickness and not knowing the cause of her illness), the entire family was quarantined and denied passage on that voyage. The Original Titanic Manifest shows the “HALL FAMILY” as passengers.
Snows at Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
