Georgiann Marie Mason passed away July 4, 2016 in San Diego, CA, where she had moved to live near family. She was best known as a talented artist, well loved teacher and especially for her work as a master silversmith.
Georgie was born Georgiann Marie Schultz on September 20, 1931 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She met Laurence Mason, an engineering student, in Pontiac Michigan, where she had her first job as an art teacher. Larry was from Boston, so after marrying and starting a family, they returned to his native Massachusetts, settling in Marblehead in 1957 and ultimately raising six children.
Georgie was an amazing artist and teacher who contributed greatly to her community. She was best known for her large, colorful silkscreen prints and especially for her silver jewelry, expertly designed and crafted. Georgie taught art in Marblehead Adult Education classes, at the JCC and in Marblehead, Swampscott and Hamilton Wenham Public Schools as well as other places.
Georgie and Larry moved to Greenville, Maine when Larry retired. He passed away in 2001 and Georgie returned to Marblehead. Several years ago she moved to San Diego to be closer to family. While there, she suffered a stroke, losing the use of her left side. More recently, she had another stroke and breast cancer she sustained in the past returned.
Georgie died on July 4th, just before the beginning of the Marblehead fireworks. In 1989, Marblehead decided not to have a fireworks display. Town residents were interviewed by the Reporter to find out how they felt about it. When Georgie was asked, she replied, “I think everyone should have as many fireworks as they can, when they can.” Georgie, thanks for the fireworks!
Georgie Mason will be remembered and missed by her son Michael Mason and grandson Timothy Mason of Juneau, AK; her daughter Julie Mason of Marblehead, MA; her daughter Jennifer Mason and son-in-law Eric Ocasio of Douglasville, GA; her son Jonathan Mason, daughter Heidi Modrusan, son-in-law Zrinko Modrusan, granddaughter Emilia Modrusan, grandsons Nikola Modrusan and Luka Modrusan, all of San Diego, CA; her great grandson Adriel Crawford of New Mexico , as well as numerous extended family members and cherished friends.
