

Joan Mulherin Palmer, 88, died July 5, 2017. Mrs. Palmer was born on April 11, 1929 in Augusta, GA to Ethel Pearson Mulherin and John Patrick Mulherin, Jr. and was raised in West Point, GA then went to St. Mary’s Jr. College in Maryland and then to Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA. She married Julian Gary Palmer Jr. of Opelika, AL on July 29, 1950, and they lived in Atlanta while he attended Emory University Medical School and she worked as a legal secretary. After graduation, Dr. Palmer served in the US Navy and they resided in Bethesda, MD while he interned at the US Naval Hospital, and then moved to Birmingham, AL for a 3 year residency in Surgery and Urology. They moved to Marietta in 1957 where Dr. Palmer joined Dr. Fred Schmidt in practice.
Mrs. Palmer was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for over 50 years. She was a charter member of Woodbine Garden Club, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta and had been active in the Woman’s Auxiliary to the Cobb Co. Medical Society. She was also an avid Bridge player.
Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her husband in 1983. Surviving are 2 sons, Julian G. Palmer III of Bay City, MI and David A. Palmer (Cathy) of Charlotte, NC, and 2 daughters, Mary Frances Weber (David) of Augusta, GA and Patricia Palmer Abrahams (Bruce) of Auburn, AL. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren: Catherine Walvoord, Lauren Jennings (Jamey), Rebecca Weber (Weston), Elizabeth Baker, Erin Grigsby (Charles), Noah Abrahams, Sean Abrahams, (Erin McCamant) Joel Abrahams (Ruth), Gary Palmer, Nicolas, Lucia Palmer, Brian Palmer; and 10 great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Monday July 10, 2017 at 10:00 am. There will be a visitation at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta from 4-6 pm on Sunday, July 9 with a rosary service at 5:30 pm.
