

Samuel Ray Chastain, age 78, of Powder Springs, Georgia, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026 after a short illness. He was the youngest of eleven children born to Donna York and Emory Winn Chastain Sr. of Cobb County. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cheryl Judith Chastain.
He is survived by his children, in birth order: Samuel Chastain and wife Tracy, with grandson Roman; Danny Lawson and wife Paula, with granddaughters Amanda and Danielle; Whitney Thomas Chastain; and Paula Chastain Zaimis and husband Harry, with grandsons Niko and Sam. He is also survived by two siblings: Donna Chastain Herndon, Paul Y. Chastain, and dozens of beloved nieces and nephews.
Sam was born in Smyrna, GA on April 10th, 1947; and was the first of his siblings to be born in a hospital. He attended Campbell High School, graduating in 1964. In 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Judith Crews, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Marietta, GA. They had three children together: Samuel, Whitney and Paula, residing in Smyrna, and then primarily in Kennesaw, GA. Sam and Cheryl were active members of many church congregations, and Sam was a longtime professional in the automotive industry, taking on various roles and responsibilities over the years. Sam and Cheryl retired to Powder Springs in 2001 and lived their remaining days in the dream home they built together. Sam enjoyed gardening, old westerns, working in the yard, fixing cars, American history, the Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. Funeral service will be 2 PM Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 PM on Tuesday. Burial will follow at Kennesaw Memorial Park Cemetery.
