

Mary Inez Davis Hatcher, 93, of Martinsville, died Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Stanleytown Health Care Center in Bassett. She was born in Twin Branch, West Virginia on February 21, 1918 to William David Davis and Nannie Shelton Davis. She grew up in Henry, VA where she attended Henry School and was a member of the basketball team. She was employed by DuPont and retired from Pannill Knitting Company. She was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church for over 50 years, Business Women’s Association and volunteered for the American Heart Association. Mrs. Hatcher was a second generation Gold Star Mother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman O. Hatcher in 1995, a son, Larry Davis Hatcher, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968; two sisters, Annis Altice and Beatrice Dillon; six brothers, Coy Davis, Farrie Davis, Donald Davis, W.D. Davis, James French Davis, Herman Shelton Davis.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Harry Lee Hatcher and Laurentia Kawie Hatcher of Boulder, CO; three grandchildren, Zachary Lee Hatcher, Davis Charles Hatcher and Christina Shelton Hatcher, numerous nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Hazel Ingram.
A memorial service will be held today, August 28, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Starling Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. David Adkins officiating.
At the request of Mrs. Hatcher, her body was donated to Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
