

Lue Ettie Hall Chumley, 90, of Baltimore, and formerly of Axton, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Her last words were, “Joy to the world, God can Accomplish it”. She was born in Axton, VA on April 10, 1921 to Walter Clay Hall and Berta Bray Hall. She was a 1938 graduate of Axton High School and received an associate’s degree from Dundalk Community College. Born to a sharecropping family, Lue worked in tobacco fields from the age of 4; and as a mother's helper and housemaid from age 11. She also worked at Dan River Cotton Mills and during WWII as a die cutter at Glen L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore. After the war, she married Warren Glen Chumley of Bluefield, W V and raised five children. She returned to work at Hutzler’s Department Store in Dundalk, Maryland, then for 20 years, she was a laboratory technician at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. First in her family to finish high school, she earned her AA Degree at Dundalk Community College at the age of 56. She audited classes into her late 70’s and sent all her children to college. She was active in her local Democratic Party, worked for the integration of her children’s elementary school , grew and canned vegetables into her late 80’s, and kept her backyard full of flowers and birds. She regularly returned to Axton and belonged to Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where she will be buried beside her husband Glen and many family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Glen Chumley; three brothers, Ollie Pete, John and Larry B. Hall.
Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis C. Martinez of Los Angeles, CA and Janet Chumley of Boston, MA; three sons, Forrest G. Chumley of Manhattan, KS, Daniel W. Chumley of Cascade, VA and Thomas W. Chumley of Baltimore, MD;
one sister, Lady Artie Hall Simmons of Axton; nine grandchildren, Heather, Kate, Sophia, Christopher, Lily, Jennifer, Sara, Joaquin and Reed; seven great-grandchildren, Lourdes, McKenzie, Halley, Eriberto, Audra, Zillan and Valentina and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday, August 5, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Mount Vernon Baptist church with the Rev. Michael Jordan and the Rev. Wayne Hannah officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Martinsville Chapel of Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home.
