

Rachel Washburn Gunter, 93, of Preston Road in Martinsville, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. She was born in the Gobblintown section of Patrick County, on March 8, 1916 to James Emmett and Stella Minter Washburn. She retired from Pannill Knitting with over 40 years of service and was a long-time member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Gunter, four sisters, Helen W. Spencer, Hazel W. Gunter, Lorene W. Smith, and Pauline W. Wiggington; five brothers, Albert Cummings Washburn, John Wilson Washburn, James Francis Washburn, Murray Akers Washburn and Edgar Minter Washburn.
Surviving are three sisters, Bernice W. Fulcher of Martinsville, Vivian W. Turner of Danville, and Reva W. Hopkins of Patrick Springs; one brother, Troy Nelson Washburn of Knoxville, TN., nieces and nephews including her caregivers, Kathy and Lea Washburn of Martinsville.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with the Rev. J. Eldon Morgan and the Rev. Tim Mills officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with a memorial reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:30 to 7:00 P.M. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church and other times at the home of her nieces, Kathy and Lea Washburn, 1750 Joseph Martin Hwy., Martinsville.
