Jeanne Mumby, beloved matriarch of the Mumby family, went home to her Father to receive His promise of eternal life on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on September 9, 1944, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Jeanne was the youngest child of Jerome Raymond Pegher and Maude Swain Pegher. From the beginning, she carried a gentle strength and a generous heart that shaped every chapter of her life.
After graduating from North Allegheny High School, Jeanne moved in with her Aunt in Charleston, South Carolina, to work at a law office and then for the local newspaper. It was there that fate quietly set her future in motion. While on leave at his ship’s home port, a young Navy Missile Technician named Douglas James Mumby crossed her path and boldly told her, at their very first meeting, that he would marry her. In an act of quiet devotion, Douglas embraced Jeanne’s Catholic faith, and the two were married on June 12, 1965, in the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in downtown Charleston — the beginning of a lifelong partnership rooted in love, faith, and unwavering commitment.
After working for the local newspaper, Jeanne and Douglas moved north to Michigan, Douglas’s home state. They settled into Michigan State University’s married housing while Douglas completed his teaching degree, welcoming their first son, Douglas James Jr. Jeanne embraced motherhood wholeheartedly, and as the years unfolded, their family grew with the births of Christopher and Thomas. Her love for her family was boundless, and she poured herself into creating a warm, joyful home.
Jeanne’s compassion extended far beyond her own household. She began working at Holt Public Schools, where Douglas taught, first as a secretary and later as a paraprofessional. In that role, she offered one‑on‑one support to countless children over the years, giving them patience, encouragement, and the kind of steady belief that can change a life. Her quiet influence touched more young hearts than she ever realized.
Her family continued to grow, and Jeanne embraced each new generation with delight. She became a grandmother in 1990 and a great‑grandmother in 2009. In time, she was blessed with twelve grandchildren and three great‑grandchildren, each one cherished. Jeanne had a special gift for choosing just the right present for each child — something that matched their unique interests and talents, making them feel seen and loved. Birthdays and Christmas were her favorite opportunities to shower her family with joy.
Jeanne’s Catholic faith was the steady center of her life. Her devotion inspired the conversion and baptism of numerous family members and even extended family. She attended Mass faithfully, served as a Godmother and Confirmation sponsor to many, and held a deep love for Our Lady, Mary the Mother of God. She also had a lifelong affection for Saint Anthony, always reminding loved ones to “ask Saint Anthony” whenever something went missing.
Jeanne is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Douglas James Mumby; and by her three sons and their families • Douglas Jr. (Amy) and their children Christen, Rembrandt, and Michelangelo • Christopher (Dionne) and their children J.D., Nicklas, Brendan, Lumine, and Hannah • Thomas (Kelly) and their children Zachary, Katie Scarlett, Hudson, and Preston. She is also survived by her great‑grandchildren Avery, Hazel, and Sunshine, each of whom brought her immense joy.
Visitation will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 1010 S. Lansing St., Mason, MI 48854 Sunday February 15, 2026 from 3:00PM-6:00PM and Monday, February 16, 2026 from 10:30am-11am.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church in Mason on Monday, February 16, 2026 at 11AM with a luncheon immediately following.
Jeanne’s life was a testament to love — love of family, love of faith, and love expressed through countless small acts of kindness. Her legacy lives on in the generations she guided, the students she supported, and the many hearts she touched simply by being herself.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Jeanne’s name to Catholic Charities of Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton County.
