On April 11, 1959, he married the love of his life, Darlene Joyce Dempsey, in Lansing, Michigan. Together, they shared a beautiful journey of over six decades, building a family filled with love and laughter.
Robert was a hardworking man who made sure his family was cared for and his work ethic was strong. He dedicated his life to various professions, notably as a meat cutter at A&P and Kmart, a truck driver at Wayne Soap Company, and later, serving in different capacities at Ingham County Animal Control and the Mecosta County Sheriff Department. Robert's contributions extended beyond his professional life. He was instrumental in implementing the pet chipping program in the State of Michigan and was recognized as an expert and trainer in animal tranquilization techniques.
Outside of work, Robert indulged in various hobbies and interests, including camping with the Grand Valley Camping Club, fly tying, hunting, and fishing. He had a knack for playing musical instruments like the organ, piano, and horn, and his English toffee during Christmas became a cherished tradition among family and friends.
Known for his caring nature, sense of humor, and perfectionist tendencies, Robert touched the lives of many as a mentor and friend. Despite his gruff exterior, he had a gentle heart and was adored by all who knew him. He especially cherished moments spent with his granddaughter, Christina, and great-granddaughters, Hannah and Kaylee, making milkshakes and riding bikes.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene Joyce Burgess, his children Michael Burgess (Joan Burgess) of Monument, Colorado; Susan Onofryton (Jerry Onofryton) of Holt, Michigan; Julie Wrzesinski (David Wrzesinski) of Leslie, Michigan; his granddaughter Christina Haskell (Branden Haskell) of Mason, Michigan and her children, Hannah and Kaylee Haskell; his sister, Becky (James) Wolf; his sister-in-law, Vicki (Wally) Juall along with other relatives and friends.
