Dansville native and proud Aggie, Walter Thomas Collins II, known affectionately as Tom, peacefully passed away on December 24, 2023. A dedicated family man and respected member of the community, Tom's legacy is woven with love, passion, and a deep appreciation for life.
Born on September 6, 1942, Tom was a graduate of Dansville public schools and held a special pride in being an Aggie. His professional journey led him to GM's Fisher Body plant in Lansing, where he followed in the footsteps of his father, a member of the inaugural crew that opened the plant. Tom worked there with dedication until its closure, leaving a lasting mark on the automotive industry and proud of that familial milestone.
In his 17 years of joyful marriage, Tom shared his life with his beloved wife, Jan Collins. Together, they built a foundation of love and companionship that touched everyone around them wherever they went. Tom cherished their yearly excursions to South Padre Island in Texas.
Tom was a devoted member of the Capital City Old Car Club and the Oldsmobile Car Club. His eyes lit up when he talked about his cherished 1967 Oldsmobile 442, a vehicle that he proudly showcased at car shows, with the Frankenmuth Auto Fest being a particular favorite.
An avid outdoorsman, Tom found solace in fishing and hunting, exploring the vast landscapes of the United States and Canada. His passion for the great outdoors was contagious, leaving lasting memories for those fortunate enough to share those adventures.
A family man at heart, Tom cherished watching his grandchildren compete in sports and found joy in sports, especially MSU football and the NCAA tournament. His humble demeanor and genuine love for family defined him, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Jan Collins, children Nikki Westrick (Dan), Mike Collins (Betsy), Steven Lewsader (Camellia), Jeffery Lewsader (Annie), and his grandchildren Ryan, Samantha, Walter Westrick, Max and Evan Collins, Walter Lewsader, and Mietta, Warren, Magnus, and Evalia Lewsader, first wife, Kristin Ciokajlo, and dear friends Gary and Cheryl Howe. He is preceded in death by his sister Nancy.
In honoring Tom's memory, let us remember the joy he found in family, his passion for cars, and the great outdoors. May he rest in peace, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished moments.
A visitation for Walter will be held Friday, December 29, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 621 South Jefferson, Mason, MI 48854.
