Mr. Kahn was the best boss and a wonderful man and I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.  My condolences to Arlene and the rest of the family, including all of the K-C employees.

Loved Aly and his Hawaiian shirts!  He will be missed.

This is the eulogy that I was asked to write.  In my absence, it was to be read by my son, Eric Sheldon, who in fact, quoted a short excerpt. 


Thank you, Arlene for asking me to speak.  

My relationship with Al goes back to our years in Beth David. He was one of the older guys, the neat guys, as we used to call them, that  my step-sister, Rita Shlafrock, hung with in the late 1940s, around 70 years ago.

Our paths came together again in the 1950s as PiLams. And starting in the 1960s he wrote insurance for many years for Florida Fill, my business.

Al was special in business, which others will speak to. He was special in PiLam, which I could talk about, but Albert being 5 years older can be better spoken for by others about those years in school at UF and PiLam. 

The zinger in this eulogy comes from my unique position of being  an olde friend who was invited, not only to the wedding of Prince Aly to Arlene, my ex-wife, but to countless events and simchas with both of them thereafter.  Who ever heard of a guy getting along so well with his ex-wife and her husband. This exceptionally cordial relationship  made me family of some sort, and Aly who had a name for everyone and everything, felt this was reason enough for him to call me his "Outlaw" his idea of family.

Outlaw.... Inlaw. ..... I felt that my nick name carried a special favored distinction.  One does not get to be an "outlaw" by just hanging around. And truthfully, I enjoyed the title.

My brother, Marvin, and I had a little shtick with Al whenever we would meet. Aly would stick out his hand, smile at us and loudly shout "The Sheldon Brothers".  In unison we would answer, "....reigning terror in the hearts of men." It was good for a laugh for years.

Aly and I had a very serious conversation shortly after he married Arlene. It will tell you about the depth of his character. We were seated in his car parked in front of his house.  Aly was concerned for my feelings, and he wanted to assure me that his marriage to Arlene would in no way impact the relationship of me with my sons, Stuart and Eric.  He had money, connections and status. I was struggling. He might have easily used his resources otherwise.

He said something like, Art....I do not want you to worry that I will act like a big shot and try to replace you or minimize you in the eyes of your sons.  You will always be their father.  We are olde friends and that's how it's going to stay.  Yes, I was Aly's Outlaw., and enjoyed his respect.

He was so generous, in big ways and small.  For my sons, he paid for  Eric's med school, and Stuart at Cornell, and when he was able to be there, he picked up the tab at Sunday breakfast for our PiLam guys. He loved being with his younger fraternity brothers and showed it.

I was a comfortable guest in Aly's home, invited to Jazz concerts, shows and many dinners. He turned away all offers to pay, one of the perks of being an "Outlaw".

Perhaps 20 years ago after enjoying my "Outlaw" status, and his endless generosity, I thought I would make him recognize my great appreciation in a material way.  I clipped out an ad from a UF magazine that featured a hand crafted beer mug with a gator handle.  It came with a beautiful stand which had a place for an engraved plaque. I had it engraved, thanking him for all he had done for me.  At the top, in big letters, I named it "The  MENCH ON A BENCH AWARD".

It still stands in a prominent place in his home.

And that's how it was.  To Aly, I was his "OUTLAW".  To me, Aly was my "MENCH ON A BENCH"

Rest in peace, my dear friend. I would be honored to sit on that bench with you.

I have been working at Kahn-Carlin for almost 29 years now and I still remember my first day there.  I was 19 years old at the time and I never would have thought that I was going to be there all of these years but I had absolutely no reason to leave. I grew up there and learned many things from Mr. Kahn.  I was blessed to have been one of Mr. Kahn's "kids" and always felt the comfort of the security even in rough times.  Today, I watched a lot of special people speak about him and one thing that everyone agreed upon was how he was simply one of a kind.  I am also so grateful for my special friendship with Arlene all of these years.  To Julie, Melissa, Stuart and Eric - may you find peace during this sad time.  His memory will live forever and I am proud to be a part of the K-C family.

Albert was one of a kind and I have very fond memories of his humor, generosity , and friendship over many years. What a guy!

I have many wonderful memories of "Mr. Kahn", as we were told to call him.  My mother, Romesa Cohen, was lucky to have worked for him for many, many years. He signed my first ever paycheck as a kid-for stuffing envelopes with calendars!  Then I was lucky to work for him as a high schooler. My sincer sympathy to the family.

I met Al Kahn when I was a "special agent" for USF&G and spent many wonderful years calling on him and the fine employees in his agency. No one brightened a room as much as Al Kahn, with his sharp wit and great sense of humor. Al was a wonderful and delightful person to deal with and always made me feel so welcome when I visited.  We miss you Al, and know that there will never be another one like you.  God Bless you and God Bless your family.

So sorry to hear about Al's passing.
I remember him coming to Dr. Salzman's office always laughing and joking with us "girls"  He was so full of life and always had a twinkle in his eye.

I had the privilege of calling Mr. Kahn the boss for close to 20 years. He had an abundance of wit combined with a business savvy that was unrivaled. He was the most generous human being I had ever known and he never forgot a favor, or a birthday! At Kahn-Carlin he taught us all how to make the proverbial lemon aid and the importance of PMA (positive mental attitude)

I started my insurance career at Kemper as an underwriter and my favorite agency to call on was Kahn Carlin.  I remember Aly in his Hawaiian print shirt going to the "closet" to bestowe me with a knife set, perfume or jewlery.  I could never leave their office without something!  He always welcomed me into their agency family.  I am now with CNA and his legacy continues with the people that continue to work for Kahn Carlin.

   My condolences to your family. Were going to miss you because as a leader. You were inspirational to many.You were a first class businessman who always treated me fairly. When things were tough;or, when I had difficult messages to deliver, you always put asside business differences and talked with me and my counterparts on a personal level. Business was business, the personal touch was the personal touch. We loved all the gifts of pens and cologne. The bigger thought behind it was we had a friendship. We will miss our freind!

I really feel so cheated that I did not get to know Al better.  Time and distance played a big part in this., but the times I was lucky enough to be in the same place, at the same time as Al were  always very pleasurable just too infrequent. This is a great loss to our family. He will be missed

Saying goodbye to Aly, Mr. K, is something that is hard to do, not only me, but for anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him and sharing time together, as those memories truly are and always will be unforgettable.  He was a wonderful man, generous, kind with a business savvy that goes unchallenged. I remember coming to work for him without even having to fill out an application!  All he needed to know was that I was the daughter of Jimmy Mack, a fellow Pi Lam and that was good enough for him!  I had the privilege of working for him and learning from him for 30 years.  He always made me feel like I could achieve any sale if I put my mind to it. My nickname from Mr. K was Lady Di, except when I regained my title of Princess, but only he could truly call me Lady Di and make me feel like I was royalty.  I will miss you so.....

Proud to say Aly was a friend!!  I always enjoyed receiving the gifts of cologne, pen or whatever he had laying around, every time I came for a visit. I will always remember his comment "if you don't ask, you don't get".  He will be missed by all who knew him!

The man, the legend. Mr. Kahn was like the grandfather I never had. His jokes were not very funny but for some reason they made me laugh. I learned a lot from him, not only professionally but personally. You are truly missed and will live in my heart forever.

A man who always made my day brighter,a mentor and friend

To the family of Al I offer my prayers and condolences. I speak as a friendly competitor od Al's for many years in the insurance. You always knew that you had better bring your lunch if you were in competition with Al but you always knew that you were competing with an honest and decent man who played by the rules. I enjoyed our conversations at AALU meetings in Washington. My prayers are with you.

I was fortunate to work and learn from Mr. Kahn.  He was someone that was unforgetable--once you met him you would not forget him.  He will be greatly missed!

"Uncle Albret" - your "Laurie girl" misses you and your wonderful, mischievous grin already. I'm certain that the cigar smoke rings you made at my youthful demand have coalesced to form a halo somewhere in the ether, and will soon make a heavenly crown befitting our "Prince". All my love -

To Aly, even though I never personaly meet you ( new employee) all I hear are good things about you, everyone loved you. Your parents must have been very proud off you.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr.Kahn this morning.I had the pleasure of knowing and serving Mr.Kahn and all the great folks from Kahn Carlin for over 10years While Manager at Scotty's Grocery in the grove.What a great guy with such a keen wit! I think he picked up the tab for the group every time they came in to get lunch! My heart go's out to the family and all the fine folks at the office!

I just wanted to everyone to know how much Mr. Kahn meant to all of us at Kahn-Carlin.  He will be greatly missed by all of us.  Mr. Kahn was one of a kind and I believe that he will always be with us, wearing his Hawaiian shirts and smiling at us, and wondering "Did you write anything today?"  Heaven has received a very special Angel on Monday.  God Bless you Mr. Kahn. I send my deepest sympathies to his family, and I want you to know that you will be in my prayers.
