After a long and full life, Anna Mae Ross passed away on November 18. She was a fighter to the finish.
Anna Mae was born in Detroit, MI. After her family moved to Miami when she was a young girl, she never looked back. Miami became her hometown. It was where she attended Beach High and the University of Miami but best of all, where she met the love of her life, Gerry. They were married 59 years and still it was not nearly enough. When she lost him in 2013 a light in her dimmed, it was only reignited by memories of him or with the delight that her family brought her.
A proud Democrat, and political activist, Anna Mae was ahead of her time with her support of all things that represent equality for race and gender. Just as her Bubbe did before her, she marched in the streets for the ERA, a woman’s right to choose and proudly served the National Council of Jewish Women. She worked to bring the Guardian Ad Litem to the state of Florida and lobbied in Tallahassee and Washington DC on its behalf.
An avid reader (especially of the news), lifelong Miami Dolphins fan, and collector of antiques and jewelry- she had a style all her own. No one admired her more than her husband.
Anna Mae is survived by her daughters Robin (Andrew) Zeldin, Jill (Spyro) Kourtis, her grandchildren Evan (Chloe), Steven, Brian and Claire; her great grandchildren Greyson and Brody and her step-grandchildren Andrew and Ilaina. The sun rose and set on her grandchildren. We are grateful to her caregiver, Angel Pujol and the doctors who supported her as she faced the increased loss of her vision in recent years.
There will be a private graveside service on November 21, 2025. If desired, donations in memory of Anna Mae can be made to: Nation- al Council of Jewish Women, Lighthouse for the Blind, or Bascom Palmer Institute.
