DEUTSCHMAN, HORTENSE, "Berrie," SHAW 3/11/22 - 9/22/18 Beloved and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who lived a full and remarkably independent life. Berrie was a beautiful, vivacious and bright woman who loved the arts and education; and was a generous contributor to many causes and charities. She remained passionate about her religion, and was a lifelong, loyal member of Temple Beth Am. Berrie, or "Nana," was the steadfast matriarch of her family, the source of her greatest pride and joy. She is survived by her son, Michael (Eileen) Shaw and her daughter Rita (Tom) Rothrock; her grandchildren Fielding (Michael) DeCoursey, Robert (Rachel) Rothrock, Lauren Rothrock, Jessica Shaw; and great-grandchildren Campbell and Foster DeCoursey and Henry and Theodore Rothrock; and her niece Melanie (Harvey) Widroe and family. Berrie enjoyed two wonderful marriages the first, to the love of her life, Robert Shaw (d. 1970); and later, to Meyer "Mike," Deutschman (d. 1995). Berrie was born in Manhattan to Reita and Milton Koenig and was raised in Brooklyn, NY with her dear sister and lifelong friend, Muriel (d. 2013). Berrie graduated from Brooklyn College and earned a Masters degree from the University of Miami. An educator at heart, Berrie was very proud to have been a Master Teacher for 34 years in Dade County where she touched the lives of countless students. She continued her passion for learning in her retirement at the Osher Lifelong Learning Program at UM. After an accident at home at age 93, Berrie moved to The Palace at Coral Gables where she was made to feel at home these past several years. The family is thankful for the many relatives and friends who have continued to be an integral part of Berrie's life; and will forever be grateful for the love and devotion of Joyce Smith, Milagros Vargas and Mayra Olazabal, her caretakers, as well as Dr. Ed Neff and Monika Adelman. Funeral services will be held at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel at Mt. Nebo, 5900 SW 77th Avenue on Sunday, September 30th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Berrie's memory to the Tikkun Olam Fund at Temple Beth Am, or to the Eisenstat Soup Kitchen Fund at Temple Judea would be most meaningful.
