It is with great sadness that I heard about Hugh; I never heard him utter a negative word about another human being, always smiling always a gentleman. This is a loss for all of us.

I am saddened by the news of Hugh’s death. I have only fond memories of the good man he grew up to be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to all of the family that was fortunate to have him in their life. With love from a distant cousin!

I love the Bernstein family and everyone in it. I grew up knowing all the kids, Hugh "baby" as we called him as a youngster, and Sybil and Dink. I went their home, slept in Patti's bed, and always enjoyed Hugh who was a great guy, friend, cousin, and contemporary. I will miss seeing Hugh and I am very sad at his passing.

 I was shocked and saddened by Hugh' s  passing. Sounds funny to say it but I always looked up to him. Family always. Kind always. A gentleman. We never started a conversation that ended because we had run out of information or opinions or jokes. Telephone or in person.

I was very saddened to hear of Hugh’s passing on Aug 24th and that I will not see him on my next Miami trip in January 2024. I would always ask my sister Robin to reach out and invite the entire Bernstein clan to her house so I could reconnect with all my cousins. On those occasions we always shared meaningful conversation and stories that left me feeling better from laughing, valued and more educated about something.

Simply put, Hugh was an extraordinary person. This is a sorrowful moment, and my heart is heavy with the loss of such a wonderful husband, father, friend, and person. I have vivid memories of a childhood spent with Hugh and his family, celebrating festive Fourth of Julys; epic Halloween trick-or-treating adventures; and many breathtakingly beautiful Christmas Eve’s. 

Hugh was always someone to admire and aspire to be like. I loved and appreciated his kindhearted nature and joyful sense of humor. Hugh will be deeply missed by the entire Craig Family and all the people in our beloved community of lifelong friends.

The days, weeks, months, and years have flown past. Hugh and I became friends during law school. It seems like only yesterday that Hugh and I sat on the roof of his apartment on Cherokee Road in Louisville. During the second year of law school, I decided to actively pursue my military career and go to Vietnam; Hugh thought I had lost my sanity, but supported my decision, nonetheless.  

On my return from Vietnam, Hugh and I reconnected in South Florida. Many happy carefree days followed. We roamed the streets of Coconut Grove and rarely visited the law library at the courthouse. Hugh was very capable and successful in his law practice, not only at the outset but throughout his career. His buddy Larry, on the other hand, was counting on Hugh to drag him through the legal woods. 

I feel now more than ever what his friendship meant to me. I will see you in heaven, my friend (if I make it). Take good care, old buddy.

To Elizabeth and sons:
Please accept my condolence for the loss of your husband and father. Hugh was a friend of mine for more than fifty years.  When I was looking for a house on the water, Hugh called me and directed me to a house across the street from his.  I bought the house.

My memory is that Hugh was even tempered and always honored the "Thumper Rule",  if you can't say any nice, don't say anything at all.

Recently, his good company at lunch was always appreciated.  Over the years, I called him many times for referrals to other attorney and to discuss case issues.  I will miss my friend Hugh.     J.T. Haley

So sad to hear of Hugh's passing.

Hugh was magnificent  person.  Always positive, always smiling and always caring about his family and friends. 

I will miss  being with Hugh at Hurricane basketball games and our regular lunches at Flannigans with Hugh, Bob, Chuck, Larry, Dan, and JT.  They were the best of times.  Hugh will always have a seat at our table.

My sincere condolences to the family.  You have lost a prince of a man.

The Byrne family sends our love and so many prayers. We are heartbroken to hear this news. As a child, we spent many Halloweens trick or treating with Hugh and his family. Like my brother John wrote, Hugh was such a kind man. He was a devoted friend to my father. My dad said to me today, "Hugh was always asking about you kids and how you were doing. I'm  so sorry to hear that Hugh Bernstein, one of my dad's great friends, passed away yesterday. I got to know Hugh as a very young boy, attending UM football games with him and my dad's group of friends, visiting his home on many a Christmas Eve for a holiday party, and spending time with him at other friendly gatherings. For many adults, engaging with young kids isn't a priority (and is often seen as an annoyance!) Not with Hugh. He was always such a bright, positive presence. Over the years, I would occasionally bump into him at UM basketball games and other social events. Seeing him always brought a smile to my face. I'll miss him very much. Rest in peace, Hugh.
