Born on October 1, 1937, in Havana, Cuba, Jacobo grew up surrounded by a close-knit family and lifelong friends. He attended the Havana Military Academy, was a dedicated member of the baseball team, and enjoyed the freedom of youth, often cruising the Malecon in his ‘57 Chevy. These formative years in Havana shaped his strong work ethic and deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
In 1961, Jacobo immigrated to the United States with his beloved wife, Hilda. Together they settled in Brooklyn, New York, where they raised two sons, David and Jeffrey. Jacobo worked in Manhattan for several years before becoming an entrepreneur. He opened a grocery store on Utica Avenue with his partners and friends. His sons, David and Jeffrey, often helped out at the store after school, quickly learning from Jacobo’s dedication and hard work.
After visiting family in Miami Beach year after year, Jacobo and Hilda decided to make Miami their permanent home. Loving the entrepreneurial life, Jaocbo opened his second store, New Breed in Downtown Miami.
Jacobo’s love for baseball was a lifelong passion he shared with his sons. Over the years, they went to countless games - from the Miami Marlins to ballparks in Chicago, Boston, California, and New York. It became a cherished family tradition. He was a proud season ticket holder for the Marlins from their inaugural year, often attending games with Hilda, his kids and grandkids by his side.
In 1976, Jacobo and Hilda discovered a passion for cruising, which took them all over the world. They became Diamond Plus members with Royal Caribbean, completing 81 cruises together. Through their children’s clothing store in downtown Miami, they developed strong friendships with crew members, who treated them like family and made every voyage feel like a homecoming.
In retirement, Jacobo remained active. He started a daily tradition at Costco where he would walk a mile through the store with an empty cart. Over time, other seniors joined him in this simple but joyful ritual, and they would often relax together in the outdoor lawn furniture afterward. This daily habit became a symbol of Jacobo’s vitality, and his ability to connect with others remained one of his most beloved qualities.
Jacobo’s life was a testament to love, dedication, and generosity. He touched the hearts of everyone he met. He was an exemplary father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Jacobo was predeceased by his beloved son, Jeffrey, and his wife, Hilda. He leaves behind his son, David, two daughter-in-laws, four granddaughters, one great-grandchild, a sister, a nephew, and several nieces. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A graveside service for Jacobo will be held Friday, November 8, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Lakeside Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 10301 NW 25th Street, Miami, FL 33172.
