Martin E. Segal, a lifelong Miami resident, attorney, author, charitable volunteer and activist, and University of Miami professor, passed away peacefully at South Miami Hospital on December 30, 2022, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
Marty was a graduate of Miami Beach High School (1957), the University of Florida (1961), and the University of Miami Law School (1964). He joined the law firm of Patton & Kanner following his graduation from law school, and served as its Managing Partner until 1987. His experience spanned all aspects of civil litigation and transactional business practice, covering contracts, corporate, commercial, probate, real estate, and entrepreneurship practice. During his time with the firm, he was involved in some of the area’s most significant real estate projects, including the development of Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo and the redevelopment of South Beach.
From 1991 until his death, Marty served as a professor and lecturer at the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration, where he specialized in business law. He authored textbooks on the subject as well as numerous law and business journal articles, and was recognized on multiple occasions for his teaching excellence. Marty also was the author of several personal growth books, and appeared in the Business Monday section of the Miami Herald from 2003 through 2012 as “Ask Doctor Law”. Marty also actively volunteered his time in support of numerous local causes, including Camillus House and Jackson Memorial Hospital, and his charitable activities included the endowment of local scholarships related to his work at the University of Miami.
Marty is survived by his cherished partner Judy Manson, his two children (Ruth Segal-Goldman and Barry Segal), three grandchildren (Davey Segal, and Matthew and Daniel Goldman), his sister (Skyward Barbara Bernstein) and brother (Howard Segal), cousins (Harriet Sparozic and Karen Yuska), his nephew (Joshua Bernstein), and other family and dear friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Marty’s life will be held at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mt Nebo (Kendall), 5900 SW 77 Avenue, Miami 33143, on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Marty’s family requests that donations in his memory be sent to the University of Miami – Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD) – www.card.miami.edu.
A memorial service to celebrate Martin's life will be held Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo (Kendall), 5900 SW 77th Ave, MIami, FL 33143.
