I made Shara's Mother's brisket this year  and had fond memories of Shara giving me the recipe.

She was the best boss I ever had.  I really looked up to her.  She was inspirational.

Dr. Pavlow was my professor for a Human Communications Theory class when I was at FAU, and I will always remember how upbeat and passionate she was about the material that she taught us. You could tell by listening to her that she had so much real-world experience, and touched and enhanced the lives of so many people around her, especially those who were struggling and of lower socioeconomic status. She was always available to help students outside of class hours, and was a pleasure to chat with, not matter if it was class-related or not. She will be missed.

Shara and I were friends from age 4. We attended nursery school together. We were in and out of each others lives, mostly on The Hurricane in the late 1960’s and on and off over the years.  This is a terrible shock and all of her friends from the Hurricane that I could reach have expressed shock and sadness. None of us knew. I learned of her passing after leaving a birthday message on FB. Shara was a caring person, beautiful and a caregiver to her own Mom as long as I can recall.  I deeply regret not knowing and being able to offer some comfort and assistance. It is clear from this cite that she had many living friends which I good to know. 

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Shara. I am so honored to have known and worked closely with Dr. Pavlow during my graduate school career at UM and I am eternally grateful for everything she has taught me and the way she has encouraged my research career. She will be truly missed. 

Shara was my professor at UM from 2018 - 2021 and she changed my life. From her intelligence and passion, the content of what she was teaching, and how she treated me as her equal; I've never felt that respected before, and the methods of communication that she instilled in me will forever alter my life for the better. My condolences for anyone that was close to her :(

I met Shara in an Ethnopolitical Conflict Resolution class in 1999?  I was struck by her intelligence and sense of humor.  On that day, I would have not predicted that in 2022, I would be feeling the loss of her friendship so deeply.  I know that my life will be less full without her in it.  Even if we did not touch base very frequently, I always looked forward to our next catch-up.  She was someone who I could talk to easily and who always had something enriching and interesting going on.  Her ideas challenged me to live my life better.  
I wish we had gotten to go on that last camping trip.  I plan on making my way there and thinking about my great friend Shara and likely, shedding a good tear.

Shara and I met when she was working at Jackson Memorial and I was consulting to the hospital. We knew each other for more than 40 years, and were good friends, even though I live in NYC. We visited perhaps four times, flying back and forth, but mostly it was phone calls, and later, texting. Shara and I understood each other's health issues (both being gifted with numerous allergies/sensitivities, and both having experience working with healthcare providers) and could always count on each other to laugh while sympathizing about the less rational aspects of the health care system and specific providers. 
I wish she had told me about her problems with finding a good gyn physician when they first happened--it was inability to find one that led to her late diagnosis.  She knew better than to defer, but she was just so angry about the bad experiences she had had. And then there was Covid...

Shara was endlessly patient with listening to my stories about family tsuris, and I listened to her stories about caring for her mother. She was warm, and she insisted on smiling through everything, even including her last weeks.  "We have to laugh," was a frequent phrase from her lips. She stayed herself until the very end--smart, funny, with a continued interested in life, even as the circle of her life contracted.  She barely complained about not making it to the bucket list camping trip that she had planned for October. I got a very sweet Peanuts thank you cartoon from her right, I think, before the hospice staff turned off her phone. 

I was very grateful to Vitas inpatient hospice after the general lack of caring she'd experienced from the outpatient program. She put a lot of effort into trying to educate the home care people about why someone who walked in saturated in perfume was not going to be able to return. 

In the last two months, we were in touch almost daily. I miss her a lot.  

Dearest Shara,
A special place has been reserved for you in Heaven cause you were so wonderful.  I was so fortunate to have you as a neighbor in Miami and then when I moved to Durham  you kept up our friendship with your great calls, texts and gifts.  Even when the rough times came you managed for us to find something to laugh about.

Shara and I were college roommates and lifelong friends.Even though our lives took different pathways and we lived in different states we always stayed in touch. For over fifty years we talked on our birthdays and special holidays.  Shara was a special person and I will miss her terribly.

Shara was the exemplar of integrity, caring, and commitment. Her heart beat for others. And that sharp mind was constantly turning over ways to engage students (in both learning and community) and to help all her organizations and projects do well--and do good. Yet she made time to visit up the hall, share a story and listen to mine, with a great smile and lots of laughter.  Shara made you feel wonderfully interesting because she actually found you so. A dynamic, unforgettable person.

When I think of Shara, two things come to mind - her smile and her positive outlook.   Her presence lit up a room and her positivity was contagious.   On one occasion Shara brought colorful flower pens for our class.  The pen is placed where I can see it daily and it will always be there as a reminder of this dear lady.  

May your memory be eternal, dear Shara.

There are many people that we meet in our lives but only a very few will make a lasting impression on our minds and hearts. These people will always listen and talk to you. They will care about your happiness and well-being. They will like you for who you are and support you at all times. It is these rare people that we will think of often and who will ALWAYS remain important to us as true friends…..this was Shara. 

This photo is from the last time I saw Shara. We met in DC in 2018 (I live in DE) and spent a few days together. Shara and I discovered the Newseum, a museum devoted to freedom of speech. We spent two full days at this museum, looking at a piece of the original Berlin Wall and a lunch counter from a 60s sit-in. Shara loved this place because of her work as a journalist and because of her lifelong role as an activist.

When I think of Shara, I think of what a wonderful, compassionate friend she was. Also, I think of the many people that she touched through her work as a teacher, but also through her volunteer work with the 100 Black Men, with the inner city outing program of the Sierra Club, with the Camillus House Spoken Word class.  She once sent me the following quote that she liked by Edward Everett Hale:
"I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do." I have passed on this quote to others and will continue to do so. 

I have a lot of good memories of times with Shara. I liked her sense of humor and her spirit of adventure. I loved taking walks with her. When I lost a loved one a few years ago, Shara said to me that he was "just a memory away". And so we all are now...

When I was a Department Chair at FAU, I hired Shara as the Administrator of a Americorp Grant, that she wrote, which paid qualified students' tuition for a semester when they volunteered at a non profit social service agency. Shara's program was so successful that it was renewed 4 times, providing over $400,000 for low income students' tuition. Many students went on to work for those agencies when they graduated. Shara was their inspiration.

Shara was a dear friend who always brought encouragement, positivity, laughter, and wisdom into my life. She was passionate in all of her causes, but I felt most especially toward her students. She believed in them and hoped they would change and improve the world through respectful dialogue.  I will never forget her gorgeous smile and open heart. Her happiest memories were during her hiking adventures and out in nature camping.  I like to think she may be in a heavenly realm now, camping in glorious places to her heart’s content.
