

He was born on August 16, 1946 in New York to his parents Joan and George Percy Matherson I. Chip is survived by his beloved wife Ligia Matherson; his daughters, Traci McLaughlin and Kelly Cryer; and grandchildren, Hunter Cooley, Tyler and Evan Cryer. Chip is leaving behind a legacy of service, strength and deep love for those around him.
He lived a life defined by dedication and courage. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy. He continued his commitment to protecting and serving others as a Police Officer and supporting investigations with NCIS worldwide. His wide-ranging skills and curiosity also led him to become an optometrist, pilot, polygraphist and many more careers reflecting a lifelong drive to learn, serve and excel.
Those who knew him, knew he had the biggest heart. Even though he was set in his own ways at times, beneath his tough exterior was one of the most loving and caring individuals you would ever meet. He had a sharp wit and loved to joke, often bringing laughter even in serious moments. His humor, loyalty and unwavering presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Chip’s life was one of service, integrity and heart. His memories will continue to live on through the stories, laughter and love he shared so freely.
A visitation will be held on January 24, 2026, from 10:00–11:00 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Holly Hill Funeral Home, 3601 Old Jennings Road, Middleburg, FL 32068, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m.
