Born on December 22, 1940, in Covington, Kentucky, Larry was the beloved son of the late Lawrence and Alfreda Hinken. A man of honor, integrity, and steadfast service, Larry proudly dedicated 20 years to the United States Navy, retiring with distinction as a Senior Master Chief. His service to his country continued in civilian life, working another 20 years at the Naval Aviation Depot in Jacksonville, Florida.
Larry’s passion for the sea endured throughout his life. A licensed captain and skilled sailor, he spent 16 years as a sailing instructor, generously sharing his knowledge with others and teaching them to navigate the waters he so dearly loved. He was not only a mariner but a mentor—steady, patient, and full of quiet wisdom.
He also had a remarkable gift for making others feel special, a quality that shone in his cherished role as Santa Claus for various community organizations. Year after year, he brought joy and magic to countless children during the holiday season.
But of all his roles, the one he treasured most was that of Papa. Larry was deeply devoted to his four grandchildren and played an active, loving role in their lives—volunteering at their schools, taking them on sailboat trips to the zoo, and planning unforgettable family vacations filled with laughter, adventure, and love. His legacy lives on in the hearts of the young lives he shaped with such care and devotion.
Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Paulette Hinken, his cherished parents, Lawrence and Alfreda, his sister Pat Arnold, and brother-in-law Tom Arnold.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Pamela Hinken and Jill Hinken Wills (Paul); his brother Barry Hinken (Robin); his sisters Chris Dobsha (Rich) and Dale Scaccia; and his treasured grandchildren: Christian Wills, Selina Wills Champney (Chris), Cassie Wills Riggsby (Chase), and Benjamin Conklin.
