Born February 17, 1950, in Paterson, NJ, Paula was the 2nd of 4 children of Paul Hanes (1919-1969) and Pearl Morris (1925-2019).
A longtime resident of Middleburg since 1988, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul (1973), and her sisters Darlene (2016) and Beverly (2017). She is survived by her husband Ken, her children Ken Schoonmaker (Jeanna) of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Tracy Sigmon of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and cherished grandchildren Eva Sigmon, Ian Sigmon, Bella Sigmon, Lily Sigmon, Levi Sigmon, Kendra Schoonmaker, and Ella Schoonmaker.
Though she was a native of New Jersey, she also lived in North and South Carolina and even Minnesota for a short time before settling in Florida. She loved the southern lifestyle and food options – with cheesy grits being a favorite.
She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, who she doted on, loved to play with, and who could always tell when a card came in the mail from Nana, because it would be covered in colorful stickers. She will be similarly missed by the small zoo of animals who regularly visited her backyard because she found great joy in feeding them. In the early days of videogames, she was a natural at Tetris. She made the world’s best cheesecake. No day-old bread was safe if she was heading to the beach because she would bring it along to feed the seagulls. She loved enjoying a long meal with family and spending time with those she loved.
The family will participate in a memorial service to celebrate Paula’s life on Thursday, May 9th, 2024 at Hardage-Giddens Holly Hill Funeral Home in Middleburg, Florida.
