

Arthur C. "Sonny" Roberts, Jr, 84, loving son, brother, husband and uncle passed away Monday, March 28, 2016. He was a long time resident of the Tallwood subdivision in Mint Hill, known to many as the "Mayor". Sonny's final three years were spent with kind support, love and care from the staff at Sharon Towers.
He was born in Charlotte on May 8, 1931, the son of the late Arthur Carlson and Katherine Price Roberts, Sr. Sonny and his sisters grew up in the Midwood community and graduated from Central High School. He worked in the family insulation business with his father and became the president of the company at his father's retirement. Sonny was an avid fisherman, boater and outdoorsman. He and his wife Shirley enjoyed spending many happy days boating on the North Carolina coast. They gave a good home to many dogs and cats and supported wildlife conservation.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 45 years Shirley Smith Roberts (the love of his life) and sisters Yvette Roberts Neel of Charlotte and Mary Catherine DeMaria of Raleigh. He is survived by his brother-in-law David and wife Dora Sue Smith of Sparta, many nieces and nephews and many loving friends.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday April 22, 2016 at McEwen Funeral Home in Mint Hill.
The family is grateful to the many neighbors in Tallwood, the 2nd floor staff at Sharon Towers and special friend Mary Ann Black for the love, understanding and kindness shown to our "Uncle Sonny". He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Sonny was one of a kind....the very best kind!
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sharon Towers residents' fund, the Humane Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
