He was born on May 27, 1932 in Erwin, N.C., the son of the late Cornelius Godwin and Stella Avery Godwin.
Mr. Godwin graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Master's in Education and a BS in Science and began his teaching career as a biology teacher.
After a blind date organized by a friend at the movie theater in Concord, NC, he met the love of his life, a petite, pretty brunette who shared his love for teaching, the late Doris Glenn Griffin Godwin. They were happily married for 56 years before her passing in April, 2011.
After moving to Charlotte in 1961, Bob taught at Central High School which later became Garinger High School. Besides teaching, Bob had a passion for sports which led him to become coach of the JV football team, baseball team and golf at Garinger and later became Athletic Director. In addition to his coaching, he also was an ACC tournament basketball referee. In his free time, he enjoyed playing sports which included soft pitch baseball with friends at Freedom Park and golf at Eastwood Golf Course. Other hobbies included reading, fishing, boating, playing chess, camping and crosswood puzzles. After his children were grown, Bob and Doris took great pleasure in helping to raise their first granddaughter, Shelby. Bob was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where he taught a Sunday School class and sang with the senior choir, The Christianaires for many years. Bob had a passion for all genres of music and could whistle beautifully to each song. He also loved to dance.
In addition to parents and wife, Bob was predeceased by two older sisters, Rotha Holmes and Mattie Stewart and earlier this year lost his only son, Gary Brooks Godwin.
Bob is survived by his oldest sister, Ruth Glennie in St. Petersburg, FL; his three daughters, Kim Anderson, Melanie Godwin, Teresa Bailey (Skipper Baliey),
fostered son, Jeff Ballard of Newport, KY and granddaughters, Shelby Bailey, all of Charlotte, NC and Terra Anderson Daughtry (Ben) of Anderson, SC, many nieces, nephews and friends.
