

Born October 25, 1929, in Liberty, South Carolina, Leatrice was the daughter of the late Essie Harris Smith and Lee Albert Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred A. “Skinny” Powers, Sr. and her brothers, Curran Smith and Stanley Smith.
Surviving are her six children, Beth Owens (Dodd), Janice Self (Lane), Fred A. “Freddy” Powers, Jr., Tammy Pope (Steve-deceased), John Lee “Butch” Powers (Kelly) and Christina Bruno (Michael); twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She loved her children and especially the family gatherings with grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Fred and Leatrice met while in high school in Greenville, South Carolina. Fred went to Wofford College in Spartanburg and Leatrice trained in nursing at Greenville General Hospital. They were married in 1948.
Leatrice went on to serve in many roles as an R.N. until her retirement in 1973. They moved to Little River 1980, where they owned and operated several “Fred and Lea’s” clothing outlets in the North Myrtle Beach area.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 P.M. Saturday, February 14, 2015, at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
