Herbert Edward Sterns, aka Poppy, husband, dad, granddad, pharmacist, and teller of corny jokes, died on Thursday, June 16, 2016. An avid Yankees and Bills fan, Herb loved watching baseball and football on his iPad and texting to his grand-kids. While not culinary gifted, he started baking pudding cakes after the passing of the love of his life, Sandra Sterns, last year. He did not actually speak Hungarian, Russian, Spanish, Romanian or Farsi although many of his friends and customers at Santa Fair Pharmacy thought he did. He was the spitting image of Tony Curtis as a young man in Buffalo, NY--that's where he met and fell in love with Sandra in 1956. They were together for 57 years. He was drafted into the Army and stationed at Fort Ord near Monterey, California. After he was honorably discharged, he decided to make his fortune in the drug store trade in Los Angeles. He became a partner at Santa Fair Pharmacy where he advised and consulted to many of Hollywood's up and coming celebrities, artists, and eccentrics. He will be deeply missed by his son, Frank Sterns; his daughter, Cynthia Underberger and husband Steven Underberger; his son, Steven Sterns and husband Barry Klezmer; two grandchildren, Westin and Lexi Underberger; and many close friends. Graveside funeral services held at Eden Memorial in Mission Hills California on Wednesday, June 22 at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations to PanCan. www.pancan.org.
Arrangements under the direction of Groman Eden Mortuary, Mission Hills, CA.
