Sanford "Sandy" E. Ettinger, age 90, of Northridge, California, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 (19 Nissan 5778). Sandy was born to Libbie (neé Goldstein) Ettinger and Sydney Alexander Ettinger, Of Blessed Memories, in Chicago. He attended Kozminsky Elementary, Hyde Park High and Wilson Jr. College, earning his Accounting degree from Roosevelt University in 1949. A month later, he realized his dream of moving to sunny Los Angeles, where he worked as an accountant.
Sandy served in the U.S. Army 1951-53 and was stationed in Japan. Upon discharge, he returned to L.A. and resumed his accounting career.
In 1954, Sandy met Grace Weber, his “basherte,” on a blind date. They were engaged just six weeks later and married in 1955, settling in the San Fernando Valley and raising their two children.
Sandy joined London Weil Accounting (now Weil & Company) as its third member in 1958. When he became a CPA, he also became a partner in the growing firm, guiding it until his early retirement in 1981. He and Grace then traveled extensively for 20 years, treasuring wonderful memories of their experiences and the people they met.
But Sandy’s greatest joy was his family, always cherishing older family members and nurturing younger ones. He was the proud and generous patriarch of a large extended family that unanimously returned his love, and was Uncle Sandy to many. Although he was preceded in death by Grace and his much-loved brother Howard, he is survived by his daughter Susan, son Robert, daughter-in-law Jane, grandsons Tommy and Sam, dozens of cousins, and many lifelong friends.
Special thanks to caregivers Esther, Suly and Martha, to Dr. M. Reza Nahed and Dr. Reza Bonabi, and to the wonderful team at Providence Holy Cross Hospital.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, Apr. 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills. Services will be officiated by Rabbi Ahud Sela.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to National Jewish Health at nationaljewish.org, or by calling 303-728-6560.
Arrangements are under the guidance of Groman Eden Mortuary.
