Donald Ray Edwards

Donald was born June 6, 1929, in Union County NC, son of the late Sylvester Hassell and Carrie Broom Edwards. He died after brief illness and was preceded in death by his siblings, Claudus, Carl, Howard, Herman, Johnny Edwards, and Pauline Mills. Donald attended Unionville High School where he played basketball. He met the love of his life and married his wife, Louise Dickerson Edwards and they displayed their love story, holding hands for 65 years. Donald loved his entire family and arranged reunions to keep track of his abundant family of cousins. He remained active splitting wood, walking with Louise and his pet Harley, caring for the farm where he was born and lived his entire life. He loved his farming life and driving his John Deere tractor. He was also a Rural Letter carrier for the US Postal service from 1961 to 1991. He was a member of High Hill Primitive Baptist Church since 1951. At a mature age, he pursued his love of flying and obtained his private pilot license. He was a Lions Club member and served on the board for the Unionville Community Center.

Survivors include his wife Louise Dickerson Edwards; two sons, Charles Edwards and wife Linda of Roswell, GA; Rex Edwards of Monroe, and one daughter Linda Edwards Hood and spouse Michael of Hillsborough NC; Grandchildren, Leslie and Layla Hood, Megan, Jennifer, Sarah, and Kate Edwards.

Visitation will be Friday, February 20, beginning at 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe. Services to celebrate the life of Donald will be 2:00 PM Saturday, February 21, 2015, at High Hill Primitive Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
