

Jerry Lemont Ammons, 81, of Monroe, NC, passed away on April 16, 2016. In his youth at Central High School in Charlotte, NC, he discovered an unexpected gift for performing and won several awards, including one for acting alongside Andy Griffith in “The Lost Colony” in the Outer Banks. It was also in Charlotte, working at City Hall, that he met his wife of 52 years, Jacqueline Nesbitt Ammons (Jackie).
He maintained his passion for communications and performance, and throughout his career worked as a foreign correspondent for the American Forces Network in Europe, a news anchor on the 6 o’clock news at WSOC-TV in Charlotte, and the news director at Monroe radio stations WIXE and WDEX. Jerry was a member of numerous civic organizations, an avid fisherman and fly-tier, a follower of politics, a compulsive reader, a veteran of the United States Army, and above all else a lover of good conversation.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie, son, Danny, and daughter-in-law Beth. He has two granddaughters, Amy O’Dirling of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Emily Meeks of High Point, NC, and three great-grandchildren, Danny, Darian, and Amber O’Dirling. His sister, Janice Jones, lives in Charlotte, NC.
Visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. A memorial service will be held at Central United Methodist Church of Monroe on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 1:00 P.M., interment will be in Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC.
