

Born on April 1, 1944 to Kermit and Isaac Ruth Rushing, Lillian was a Union County native. She was a graduate of Forest Hills High School and Virginia Commonwealth University. She later received post-graduate teacher licensure from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was a teacher in the Union County public schools where she taught elementary grades, special education, and art to generations of students. Lillian was also an active member of First Baptist Church of Marshville where she taught children’s church and was a member of the handbell choir. As far as hobbies, Lillian had many loves and interests in her life. These included sewing, quilting and dollmaking. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, and especially spending time with her friends and family after her retirement.
Along with her parents, Lillian is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Giles; brothers, Charles Rushing and Allen Rushing; and sister, Nancy R. Presson. She is survived by her sons, Robert L. Giles and Richard T. Giles (Helen); grandchildren, Alexander Giles and Catherine Giles; and sister, Virginia R. Windsor.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. A funeral service to celebrate Lillian’s life will be held on Monday, January 6, 2025 at 11:00 am in the McEwen Colonial Chapel with burial immediately following the service at Williams Griffin Cemetery.
