Henry was born in New Kingston, New York to William Henry Dougherty and Inez M. Hosier on 31 Dec 1933. Henry's early life (Hank to all who knew him) was spent on a dairy farm in upstate New York. Alongside his 10 brothers and sisters he cared for the family's animals and worked the dairy farm and the fields. He engendered a lifelong love for nature and the outdoors especially Holstein and Jersey cows. Hank also spent years working on a neighboring chicken farm.
Hank enlisted in the US Air Force on 2 February 1953 after graduating high school in 1952. After retiring from the Air Force in 1979, Hank became a handyman, lovingly known as Handyman Hank. He spent the next three and a half decades helping his community by maintaining their homes. He also repaired lawn care equipment for many of the local lawn care businesses and firemen.
For Hank, Family meant everything and he showed this by always being ready to help in any way he could. He lived to Serve.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents, William and Inez Dougherty, eight of his siblings, and his wife Barbara.
He is survived by his sister Ida Pekrul, New Kingston, NY; and his brother Bob Dougherty, Marathon, NY. He is also survived by his three children Darrell (Linda) Dougherty, San Antonio, TX; Keith (Tammy) Dougherty, Norman, OK; and Colleen (David) Mercer, Panama City, FL with his first wife Marilyn; and Barbara’s son David (Melissa) Ward, Montgomery, AL. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
