

Doctor (Colonel) James N. “Raz” Rasberry, Age 87, of Montgomery, AL, passed away on January 28, 2017. He was born in Meridian, Mississippi on May 16, 1929. Doctor Rasberry attended Meridian Junior College, graduated from Mississippi College and received his Doctorate in Ophthalmology from University of Tennessee.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth Willcutt Gurley on November 14, 1977. Colonel Rasberry served his country as a Doctor of Ophthalmology in both the US Air Force and Army; between his tours of military service he joined a private Ophthalmology practice in Birmingham. Raz was a member of Frazer United Methodist Church and the Alpha and Omega Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his sister Delores (BQ) Lee of Meridian, MS; brother-in-law Cliff (Nell) Willcutt, Montgomery, AL; sons: Steve (Jenny) Gurley, Birmingham, AL; Brian (Melanie) Gurley, Cumming, GA; David Rasberry (Deborah) Moody, AL; Michael Rasberry, San Diego, CA and daughters Sheila (Richard) May, Weaverville, NC; Deborah Rasberry, New York, NY. He was blessed with 9 grandchildren. His beloved wife, Mary, preceded him in death. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at 11:00 am at Alabama Heritage Chapel with Dr. John Ed Mathison officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Pallbearers are Frazer UMC’s Alpha and Omega class, Cliff Willcutt, Wayne Clark, Ed Sensintaffar, Larry Brittan, and Gerald Donaldson. The family would like to express their appreciation to Comfort Care hospice service and to the nursing staff at Aspire Cahaba River for the love and care provided Raz.
