Obie Warren Portwood of Greenville, Georgia passed away on July 22 after an extended illness. He was born on July 15, 1936 to Lewis and Mary Portwood. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Eleanor Pitts Portwood. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Warren Portwood (Lisa) and five siblings - most recently his brother, Lewis (LaGrange, Georgia) who passed 12 days prior.
He is survived by his son Mitchell Portwood (Kim), daughter Marcia Stuart (David), and eight loving grandchildren who knew him as “Big Daddy”: Michael Portwood, Jr., Whitney Stuart Capraro, Caroline Portwood Stelling, Mitsi Portwood, Ethan Stuart, Leslie Stuart, Grant Portwood and Chance Portwood. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Obie was a F. & A.M. Mason, Royal Arch Mason and member of the Brotherhood of Elks Order.
He was a manager in the aluminum extrusion industry for more than 40 years, beginning with William L. Bonnell in Newnan, GA and retiring with Thermalex, Inc. in Montgomery, AL. A life-long car enthusiast; Obie enjoyed his retirement as a driver for Enterprise Rent a Car.
Obie loved sports. As a resident of both Georgia and Alabama, he was known to cheer for the Dawgs but would also should out “Roll Tide!” (Much to the dismay of his sons and several grandchildren who attended UGA).
A private memorial service will take place with family in Georgia at a later date.
Arrangements under the direction of Alabama Heritage Funeral Home, Montgomery, AL.
