Duane Charles Maitland

Mr. Duane C. Maitland, age 93 of Muskegon, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016. He was born December 12, 1922 in Brooklyn, MI to Charles and Florence (Miller) Maitland. He married Isabell Zerns on January 18, 1947. She preceded him in death in 1988; along with their daughter, Bonnie Tarte, and their daughter-in-law, Dawn Maitland. Duane and Isabell are survived by their children; Larry Maitland, and Connie (Philip) Cantu of Twin Lake; 6 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and son-in-law Roger Tarte. He married the former Velma Shields-Sly of Muskegon in 1989, who precedes him in death along with her son, Robert (Audrey) Sly. Duane is survived by Velma’s children, Linda (Gerald) Grow of Whitehall, Judith (Dave) Marchido of Florida, Randel (Noreen) Sly of North Muskegon, and Richard (Jen) Sly of Muskegon; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and step grandchildren; 2 sisters, and 1 brother; and many extended family members and friends. Duane was a WWII veteran of the United States Army, serving in the European Theater Campaign. He was a life member of the VFW Post 7729. A memorial service with military honors will be held on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 11am at Ever Rest Funeral Home and Chapel; 1783 E. Keating Ave in Muskegon, with Pastor Benjamin Jansen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10am. Interment in Egelston Township Cemetery.
