Mary was rendered deaf after a childhood illness. She would attend Michigan's School For the Deaf in Flint for many years, where she learned to read, write, and communicate. After reuniting with her sister Sarah, she went to live with her and her family in Muskegon, where she was able to enjoy spending time with Sarah and her children and grandchildren, camping, knitting, and crocheting.
Mary was preceded in death by her brother, George.
