Dick was an Army veteran and upon his discharge took a position at Ott Chemical where he proudly served on the union negotiating team to secure better wages and benefits for his co-workers. A nearly 50 year career as a Real Estate Broker, owning his own agency, followed.
Dick will be remembered as a kind, generous man with a quick wit and an ever ready smile that would light up a room. If there was fun to be had, he was likely in the middle of it. Spending 6 months of the year at the Ft. Myers Beach, Florida condo with his “Florida Family” and visiting Bonita Bill’s to listen to Chuckie from Kentucky play and to dance with Cheri to Harvest Moon allowed an important peek into his larger than life personality.
Dick loved sports…watching, playing or spotting at the Reeths-Puffer games while his son, Charlie called the JV games. Fishing with his buddies for walleye or ice fishing or catching bluegills off the dock was sure to make him happy.
Volunteering with League of Michigan Bicyclists for 20 years was an important part of his life. Bicycle touring with LMB filled many summer vacations … what a great way to see the country! He originated the ODRAM ride (One Day Ride Across Michigan) which is now a fund-raiser for the Junior Diabetes Foundation.
Dick is survived by his wife, Cheri; sons Charlie (Rae), Jim (Bev); daughter, Carla (Jamie) Givens; son-in-law, Kenneth Mitchell, and his treasure trove of grandchildren who he enjoyed watching develop into fine, well-grounded, productive young adults: Matthew, Chelsea, Trevor, Angel, Tea’, Macen, Meadow and Bill.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Betsy Mitchell and granddaughter, Ally Givens and his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 12:30- 3:30 on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the White Lake Eagles #3214,1204 S Lake St, Whitehall, MI 49461.
