Amy passed away peacefully on May 23rd, 2025, surrounded by her family. She will be dearly missed by her family and remembered for her love and strong family values. She was most excited to be reconnected with her beloved husband, Michael Mah. We hope she is reunited with her husband and enjoying their new journey together.
Here is a poem from a family member:
She is born in Hong Kong, the 10th of 11th children,
She is boarding a boat to Canada, they name her Mark,
She is moving to Nanaimo alone, with little to no English,
She is living in a homestay with five other women for $50 a month,
She is attending government-funded English, administrative and hairdressing schools,
She is driving a Mercury Cougar around town with her friends,
She is brave, poised and stylish, always.
She is getting married to a young Mike Mah,
She is building a beautiful home and fills it with green furniture,
She is never truly appreciating the well-manicured lawn,
She is smoking by the stove fan,
She is adding grapes to salads,
She is hosting New Year’s parties and singing Auld Lang Syne,
She is happy.
She is helping her brother build a business and a home,
She is creating foundations for us,
She is making us Chinese dinners with a hot soup to end every meal,
She is telling us to keep it down over the intercom while we play upstairs,
She is stocking our fridge with homemade jars of iced tea,
She is chasing teenagers across the parking lot with a broom when they try to steal,
She is our childhood, our formative years.
She is loving our children like she loves us,
She is criticizing and pinching their cheeks like she does us,
She is annoyed by their loudness but so are we,
She is giving them frozen muffins and ice cream that she steals from the dining room,
She is eating chips and Oreos with them,
She is taking us on 4-hour expeditions around grocery stores,
She is patient while we grow our family.
She is unknowingly breaking her back getting off a bus,
She is getting surgery at Victoria General Hospital, twice,
She is healing until her arthritis takes over her hands and feet,
She is constantly getting wound care and managing infections,
She is at the cancer clinic, getting radiation on her lungs ,
She is refusing treatment when the cancer returns,
She is on the floor, she cannot walk.
She is still funny, witty and fierce, though her body is not,
She is not crying and tells us not to either,
She is living and has lived with no regrets, anger or sadness,
She is grateful and loved,
She is a little scared,
She is excited to visit her godmother, Uncle Mike, Aunty Chris and Uncle Peter
She will dance.
She says ‘she is always with us’,
She is our Aunty Amy,
She is everyone’s Aunty Amy.
