Charles Mallin “Mallie” McCarty of Naples, Florida passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Marlene McCarty, and children Jess McCarty of Miami; Jill McCarty of Naples; and Jody McCarty and her husband Craig Fisher of Marco Island. Mallie was a proud grandfather of Zane McCarty-Fisher and Tye McCarty-Fisher. Mallie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Leah McCarty of Milford, Ohio and his sister LuAnn Cobb of Tucson, Arizona.
Mallie’s passion was sports, especially basketball. He grew up in Milford, Ohio and graduated from Milford High School in 1956, where almost seven decades later, he still holds several basketball records, including most total points with 1,308 points, most points in a single season in 1955-56 and 1954-55, and most field goals in a season in 1955-56. In 1956, he was selected First Team All-State of Ohio and recognized as one of the top 500 basketball players nationally. He attended The Ohio State University, where he played basketball during the 1956-57 season. Following a basketball injury, he transferred to Wilmington College where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati.
From 1960 to 1987, Mallie coached basketball and taught at high schools in Sidney, Ohio; Sunman, Indiana; Blanchester, Ohio; and Indian Hill, Ohio, before returning to his alma mater, Milford, where he finished his coaching and teaching career, including coaching his son, Jess. He also coached the softball teams of his daughters, Jill and Jody, both of whom went on to play college softball. In recent years, Mallie returned to coaching basketball in his late 70s and early 80s for the teams of his grandsons, Zane and Tye, in Naples, Florida.
He was inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984; the Clermont County, Ohio, Sports Hall of Fame in 1997; and the inaugural class of the Milford Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He was an avid, lifelong Ohio State basketball and football fan who rarely missed a game and enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.
He had a lasting impact not only on his own children and grandchildren, but on the many players and students he coached and taught, especially those who did not have fathers in their lives.
