He will be deeply missed by his wife, Karen; daughters Tonya (Michael) Lueder of Milwaukee, WI, Shannon (Chris) DeSalvo of Leawood, KS; son Troy (Lori) Buhs of Naples, FL; four grandchildren, Meryl and Tess Lueder; Evelyn and John DeSalvo; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents, three sisters and three brothers.
Daniel was born August 25, 1945 in Peoria, IL to the late Daniel and Annette (Stomberg) Buhs.
Daniel attended East Peoria High School and graduated from Bradley University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Building Engineering and Construction Technology.
Daniel was a member of the Naples Pelican Bay Rotary for over 30 years and a recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow Award.
For 16 years Dan had various roles in construction management and administration with General Telephone in Bloomington, IL, Phillips Swager Associates and Joseph Company in Peoria, IL and American Medical Buildings in Milwaukee, WI. Dan relocated to FL in 1983 with Southern Gulf West Construction. In 1989 Dan's passion for construction led him to start his own company, Vanderbilt Bay Construction Inc. For the next 27 years he built many commercial projects in the Southwest FL area including fire stations, parks, schools, multi-family residential, county facilities, and mixed-use buildings. Dan's career was as dynamic as his personality. The one thing that remains paramount in remembering Dan is he built enduring friendships that take more than mere brick and mortar.
Dan had a zest for life and it showed. He was an avid motorcyclist enjoying both short and long rides, as well as trips in South America. Motorcycling with close friends led him to the Blue Ridge Mountains where he and Karen eventually purchased a cabin with mountain views that brought a lot of peace and serenity, as well as, many new friendships. He also enjoyed boating and fishing and loved sharing time on the water with family and friends.
His family would like to thank Physicians Regional Pine Ridge and Avow Hospice for the kindness and care he received.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life for May 17, 2026.
