Marie grew up in a large Italian family in Brooklyn, New York, graduated from Erasmus High School and attended Pace College. She then went to work in New York City for McGraw Hill and several other firms where she excelled. At age 25, Marie made the life-changing decision to live and work in Switzerland. She travelled throughout Europe, made enduring friendships, and developed into a remarkable woman – independent, strong, loyal, gracious, sophisticated – and feisty. She returned to the USA three years later, worked for several accomplished individuals and ran her own business, the Library Bureau, for many years.
Marie met and married her soulmate, Philip Ablove, while working at Mohawk Data Systems. Together they followed Phil’s legal/business career from New York to Massachusetts, San Francisco, and Houston, making dear friends along the way. After retirement, they lived in the Washington DC area and finally at Marbella, Pelican Bay in Naples, Florida for the last ten years. Maire and Phil became world travelers and spent many vacations overseas with family and friends. They learned to sail and shared many adventures together sailing their cherished RunnyMede.
Marie is survived by her brother, John Fernandez MD, her sister-in-law, Essie Schloss, and her brother-in-law, Michael Ablove, many nieces and nephews and life-long friends. Marie was predeceased by her parents, Clementina and John Fernandez, and her husband, Phil.
While Marie was accomplished in so many ways, she would describe her relationship with her husband Phil as her legacy. For the last twenty years of her husband’s life, he became progressively more incapacitated by Parkinson’s Disease. With great love and steadfastness, she cared for him under sometimes trying circumstances. She never wavered or tired of keeping up his spirits and, importantly, his dignity during these difficult times. Family and friends take great comfort in knowing she is back in his loving arms.
Marie is interred with Phil at Hodges Memorial Gardens, Naples Florida. Contributions can be made to the Parkinson’s Association of Southwest Florida or any Parkinson’s organization of your choice.
