Dr. Rolenzo A. Hanes (Captain USNR), prominent Naples orthodontist, passed away in his sleep on May 3rd after a full and rich life of 93 years. He was a kind, loving and humble man who was dearly loved and respected by all who knew him, and as many of his generation, had a self-deprecating sense of humor. In recent years, when asked how he was, blind in one eye, deaf, and with no short-term memory, he’d usually say, “Well, I can’t see, can’t hear. And can’t remember, but other than that, I’m fine!” He grew up in Gainesville, Fl and Indianapolis, Indiana and was a successful and leading national orthodontist who attended the University of Florida and graduated from the Indiana University Dental School as one of its first two orthodontic students. He served in the Navy in WWII as a dental officer onboard the USS San Francisco and achieved the rank of Captain. He also taught at the Indiana University Dental School and was nationally known and respected for his orthodontic acumen. He was a member of the leading orthodontic society, the Edward H. Angle Society. He left a successful practice in Indianapolis, Indian to semi-retire and start a practice in Naples at the age of 52 when Naples was a small town of about 10 thousand. As one of the first members of the Poinciana Golf Club he played opening day held the honor of having had the most “aces”. He was well respected and admired by many in the Naples professionals. He was an excellent pilot with single engine, multi-engine instrument and commercial. He learned to fly when he was in his twenties, and co-owned 4 different airplanes over his life and loved flying his family around the country. He is survived by his adoring wife of almost 69 years, Madeline W. Hanes, his sons Richard (Dee) of Manakin, Virginia and David (Patricia) of Naples and ten grandchildren, Sean (Jodi), Brian (Nancee) of Naples, Christopher (Norma), Timothy, April, Joy, Peter, Stephen, Dawn and Michael of Manakin, Virginia, all who adored their “Papa”.
