He was born on May 29, 1936, in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Margaret (Hergenroeder) and Howard Mangold. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan (Haller-Morrison); his daughter Beth Cooper (Glenn); his son Michael (John Goucher); and his son Doug (Shirin). He was a devoted stepfather to Jeff and Liz Morrison (Sam Cadena). He was a doting grandfather to seven grandsons: Ryan, Jonathan, Andrew, Joseph, and David Cooper; and Jason and Steven Mangold. He was preceded in death by his sister Lois Pail and is survived by his sisters Jeane Moore, and Patricia Fitzgerald. He was “Ronnie” to his siblings and childhood friends, “Ron” to his contemporaries, “Dad” to his kids, “Grandpa” to his grandkids, and “The Big Guy” to numerous Pail, Moore, and Fitzgerald nieces and nephews.
While growing up, Ron’s favorite times were spent causing good trouble on the streets of Bloomfield with friends like Jackie Walton, Dick Fitzgerald, and Bobby Mitsch. He spent summers “up camp” at Camp Cowley in Evans City, PA where the only running water was the Connoquenessing Creek. In his teenage years, Ron attended Central Catholic High School where he starred (allegedly) on the bowling team. During this time and in his college years Ron worked at Howard’s, his father’s butcher shop, where he delivered packages to customers and would occasionally assist his beloved Uncle Herbie in “running the numbers.” He was the first college graduate in the family, earning an Accounting degree from Duquesne University in 1957. Ron married Helen (Skippy) Abel in 1959, with whom he raised their three children. He also served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1960.
Ron held various accounting jobs in several firms before joining Divine Providence Hospital in Pittsburgh as an Assistant Administrator in the late 1970s. He eventually rose to the position of President which he held until 1993. In 1996 he married Susan Morrison after a long courtship. After years of dividing their time between Pittsburgh and Florida, they made Naples their permanent home in 2014. They enjoyed a long and happy retirement, taking bike rides, viewing sunsets on the beach, and watching Naples grow. He was involved in the Naples community in various aspects, from being on the board of the Naples museum, volunteering at Naples Community Hospital, Collier County Government, and working as a trustee for the Naples Police Pension Fund.
Though he loved living in Naples, he never stopped loving Pittsburgh, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates. As he slowed with age, his favorite pastime was to watch Pirates games with Susan where he would drive her to distraction with constant predictions about what was about to happen while he lamented the perennial futility of his favorite team.
Funeral arrangements: Per his wishes, there will be no viewing. The family is planning a Mass of Christian Burial as well as a celebration of a life well-lived over the summer. Details will be communicated to family and friends when they become available.
