Arnold “Brent” Alper, 87, native and resident of New Orleans, died on Monday, April 10, 2023, at home surrounded by family. Brent was born October 31, 1935, to Cleo Wilhite and Aaron Alper. He was their only child and the apple of his mother’s eye.
He graduated from Fortier High School (1951), Tulane University (1954), and Tulane School of Medicine (1959). He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Charity Hospital. He served as a Captain and Physician in the United States Air Force, stationed in Korea, 1961-1962 and at Keesler Air Force Base 1962-1963. Upon his return from military service, he maintained a solo practice caring for patients at Mercy Hospital until Hurricane Katrina (2005) at which time he transitioned his practice to Touro Hospital. He retired after seeing his last patient at 80 years of age.
Brent met his wife, Alys Urquhart, through mutual friends and married November 23, 1966. He was a devoted son, loving husband, and father/father-in-law. He was adored by his patients for whom he cared tirelessly as well as all the hospital staff with whom he worked. Brent had the privilege to care for the Sisters of Mercy, Christian Brothers, and numerous priests.
Outside of medicine and family his greatest love was sports. He relished watching or attending sporting events with his sons. Later in life he took up running and at the age of 60 completed the Mardi Gras Marathon.
He is survived by his wife, Alys, their five children, Alys, Brent, Alan, Anne (Jim), Ashley, and step-grandson, Daniel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleo and Aaron Alper, uncle, Joe Alper, and aunt, Marietta Alper.
Special thanks to the love and support of countless family and friends as well as the staff at Guardian Hospice (Maria and Neaobbie).
