Dear Marc, 

Please accept my most sincere condolences for your and your family’s loss. 
Alice will be much missed.

She and I met in Tom Daley’s poetry workshop where, as you might imagine, we became fast friends as well as colleagues. I met you at your and Alice’s home in Cambridge where Alice and I once workshopped our poems together. We continued to help each other with our work over the years over the phone up until last July—“Chad iii” was her long poem of the moment. 

How can I say how much she meant to me? She was so true. In every way. Of how many people can we say that?

Farewell my friend, my sisterhood sista, and fellow poet.  You lit up our Temple with your light and love, your humor and intellect.  

Your memory will always be for a blessing.  You will be missed, and dearly thought of.


Condolences to Marc and the entire family.  I hope knowing how much Alice  impacted so many people will be consoling to you all.






Alice was a force of nature. She fought hard for her life up to the very end of it, just as she fought fiercely  as an attorney for civil and voters’  rights, for children she defended in juvenile  court  and for prison reforms. Alice was a visionary, an intellectual, and a poet. She was passionate, energetic and generous —as a loving wife, mother and friend. She was a spiritual seeker. When Alice rode her tricycle to  study Torah  on Saturday mornings, she often parked it by the door of the  Temple  library, where the study group meets. I once followed Alice in my car behind the tricycle  as we rode to a coffee house to  play Scrabble (Alice  won). I will summon  my memories  of Alice  to inspire me when my courage fails.  May her memory be for a blessing to Marc, Nora and Molly.

I am a classmate of Alice, Barnard College '63.  Alice was a dynamo-bubbling with enthusiasm, joyous at the good ,true and beautiful.  She was  magnificently angry at injustice and malfeasance.  Alice was an inspiration to all through her poetry and her legal work.  I will sorely miss her.

Alice, I miss you. You have left an amazing legacy and an indelible mark on everyone who knew you and thousands who did not have that privilege. I will miss your humor, your creativity, and your unrelenting commitment to justice for everyone. I am glad that Barnard brought us together. Condolences to Marc and your family. I know your memory will be for a blessing. 

Alice's keen wit, intellect and loving heart will always be cherished.
