While at Loyola he met the love of his life, Mary Jane Brodrick and they were married in October 1954 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church.

Alvin was a devout Catholic and served as a Lector at St. Louis Cathedral and as an Eucharistic Minister in Zweibrucken and Philadelphia. He enjoyed fencing (sabre and epee) and competed nationally.
