She was the revered Nana to twenty-six grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
Betty was a devout Catholic. Throughout her life, she inspired her children and many others with her steadfast faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother and the rosary. She was a special person who dedicated everything to her family and to improving the lives of the children in her community. Her father was Thomas Jenniskens, a dairy farmer who emigrated from Holland in 1920 with Fr. Peter Wynhoven. Her mother was Louise Naquin Jenniskens who was from Labadieville, Louisiana. She was born and raised on the Hope Haven property in Marrero along with her siblings, Fr. Peter Jenniskens, Fr. Thomas Jenniskens S.J., Gertrude Jenniskens Pouwels, and John “Sonny” Jenniskens.
Betty was a teacher. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in New Orleans and later St. Mary’s Dominican College where she obtained her degree in education. Her first job was at the Barataria School in Marrero. She then taught fourth grade for many years at Immaculate Conception School in Marrero. During her time at Immaculate Conception, she earned a master’s degree in Special Education. In her final years of teaching, she returned to Hope Haven/Madonna Manor where she taught at-risk youth. After retirement from teaching, she served on the board of its affiliated institution Hope Haven.
Betty’s family would like to thank the staff and administrators at St. Margaret’s at Mercy, where she received skilled care in her later years and those at Wynhoven Healthcare Center who offered her care and comfort in her final days.
