Anna Mae Campo Sciarrotta, 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 12, 2023, surrounded by the people she loved. Anna Mae was born on October 12, 1938, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1956 and continued her education at Soule Business College. Over the course of her professional career, her family owned and operated Campo’s Florist, Alice’s Fairyland Children’s Clothing and then opened Carrollton Avenue Tuxedos and Alterations. She and her husband Leo opened one of the first arcades and snack shops in the 1980’s called Fun Explosion, which provided much joy and entertainment for the young people in the Mid City area. They retired from business after Hurricane Katrina and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Anna Mae was a fervent supporter of the arts and would continually provide costuming and alteration services to local theaters, including Le Petit Theatre, asking nothing in return. She loved all things Mardi Gras and was known to never miss an opportunity to attend a ball or a parade. She was an avid sports fan, always supporting the De la Salle Cavaliers, LSU Tigers, and her beloved New Orleans Saints.
Anna Mae is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Leo Samuel Sciarrotta, her parents, Vincent “Jimmy” Campo and Josephine Catalanotto Campo, and her grandchild, Gentry James Sciarrotta. She is survived by her children, Jennie Ann Sciarrotta (Charley Hassinger), Joseph Anthony Sciarrotta (Kathy), and Vincent Campo Sciarrotta. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, Alex Bonura (Marleigh Laizer), Katie Koppens, and Joey Sciarrotta. She is survived by her siblings, Carolyn Campo Marino (Vincent), Genevieve Campo Vinciguerra (Anthony) and Steve Vincent Campo. She is survived by her Sisters-in-Law, Rosie Bradford and Marie Liali. Anna Mae is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and Godchildren, especially her “personal medical team” consisting of her Godchild, Joseph Anthony Marino (Melody), Marianna Campo Miceli (Giana and Olivia), and Lucille Buscemi Trahant (David) who assisted in her care until her last breath.
Our family would like to give thanks to Anna Mae’s caregivers at Fresenius Medical Care Center and Metairie Health Care Center for ensuring that she was treated with care and dignity throughout her battle with End Stage Renal Disease. We would also like to give special thanks to the 5th floor staff at East Jefferson General Hospital for providing exceptional and compassionate palliative care to Anna Mae in the last days of her life.
