

Retired neurosurgeon Carl Frank Culicchia entered into rest on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the age of 95. Carl was a native of Brooklyn, New York, and a long-time resident of New Orleans. He attended Tulane University (B.S) and Tulane Medical School, and later served as a general medical officer in the United States Air Force. He began practicing medicine in New Orleans in 1961 until his retirement in 1998. He was instrumental in establishing two hospitals and the first MRI laboratory on the Westbank. His one-man effort has now grown into one of the largest neurological and neurosurgical practices in the New Orleans Gulf South region. In 2017, he received the Louisiana State Neurological Society’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also an active parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church for the past 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Margaret Ippolito Culicchia; his parents Frank and Maria T. Culicchia; his son Carl F. Culicchia, Jr., and his sister Annette C. Hagen.
Carl is survived by his loving, daughter Maria C. Ferro (Salvador); sons Frank Culicchia (Cappy), Leonard P. Culicchia (Leslie), and John J. Culicchia; sister Rosalee C. Serros (Robert); grandchildren Catherine M. Culicchia, F. Michael Culicchia, Ashley C. Cash (Todd), Carl L. Culicchia (Annie), Jennifer E. Culicchia, Matthew P. Ferro (Alison), Guy A. Ferro (Kaley), and Daniel J. Ferro; great grandchildren Ryan Cash, Brooks Cash, Sidney Culicchia, and Luca Ferro; and daughter-in-law Rhon Culicchia.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Charles Thomas and to the ICU nursing staff at West Jefferson Medical Center for their care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. 6367 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans LA 70118, on Monday, September 25, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with a public visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Committal services are private. Father Mark Thibodeaux, S.J., is officiating.
